Toor Dal Khichdi (Arhar Dal ki Khichdi)

Ingredients:

  • Toor(Arhar) Dal /Peigon Pea : 1/2 cup
  • Rice : 1/2 cup
  • Turmeric powder : 1 tsp
  • Hing (Asafotieda) : 1/4 tsp or a pinch
  • Jaggery : 1/2 tbsp
  • Salt : to taste
  • Water : 2-1/2 cups

For tempering :

  • Oil : 2 tbsp
  • Rai (Mustard Seeds) : 1/4 tsp
  • Jeera (Cumin Seeds)  : 1/4 tsp
  • Garlic chopped : 2-3 cloves chopped
  • Red chili powder : 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder : 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder : 1 tsp
  • Garam masala : 1/2 tsp

Recipe:

  1. In a bowl mix equal portions of toor dal and rice together.
  2. Wash them properly and drain all the water.W_Khichdi4
  3. Now transfer it to a pressure cooker.
  4. With the dal and rice in the pressure cooker add 2-1/2 cups of water.
  5. To it add hing (asafotieda) ,turmeric powder,jaggery and salt.W_Khichdi55
  6. Put the lid of the pressure cooker and cook for until 3-4 whistles and then turn off the flame.
  7. Meanwhile prepare the tempering for khichdi.
  8. For the tempering in a small pan heat around 2 tbsp of oil.
  9. Once hot lower the flame and add mustard seeds and jeera.
  10. Once they starts spluttering add chopped garlic.W_Khichdi6
  11. Stir it little and add turmeric powder, red chili powder,coriander powder and garam masala.
  12. Turn of the stove and keep it aside.
  13. Once the cooker cools down completely trasfer the prepared khichdi into the serving bowl.
  14. On top of the khichdi pour the prepared tempering .
  15. Mix the tempering with khichdi before eating and enjoy .

  • If you want to make it more healthy you can also add some veggie to the khichdi like carrots ,green peas,bottle gaurd ,beans etc .of your choice .This could be one way of making kids eat a complete meal dal,rice and veggie.
