Aloo matar gravy

W_AlooMatar2Aloo matar recipe Ingredients:

  • Potatoes : 2 big size or 4 small sized chopped roughly in around half inch cubes.
  • Matar (Green Peas) : fresh or frozen 1 cup
  • Tomatoes : 2 medium sized chopped
  • Onion : 1 small sized chopped if using big size then half only.
  • Green chilis : 2 chopped
  • Ginger : half inch grated
  • Garlic cloves : 2-3 cloves grated
  • Freshly chopped coriander : 1/4 cup
  • Turmeric powder : 1 tbsp
  • Red chili powder : 1/2 tbsp
  • Coriander powder: 1 tbsp
  • Garam masala : 1 tsp
  • Kasuri Methi (Dried Fenugreek Leaves) : 2 tbsp
  • Oil : 4 tbsp
  • Jerra (Cumin seeds) : 2 tbsp
  • Salt : 2 tsp according to your taste
  • Sugar : 1/2 tbsp
  • Water : 2 -1/2 cups
  • Fresh coriander : for garnishing


  1. If you are using frozen green peas just boil peas with water in microwave for 2 minutes or on stove.Keep them aside.W_AlooMatar4
  2. In pressure cooker heat around 4 tbsp of oil.Keep flame on medium low.
  3. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Let the cumin seeds become little darker brown and release strong aroma.
  5. Add grated ginger and garlic and saute for a while.
  6. Now add chopped onions and saute till little tender.W_AlooMatar5
  7. Then add chopped green chilies and tomatoes and keep on sauteing till all the juices from tomatoes dries up and oil start separating from the masala.W_AlooMatar6
  8. Now add turmeric powder,coriander powder,red chili powder ,garam masala and kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves).
  9. Mix well and then add chopped potatoes  and green peas.
  10. Add 2-1/2 cups of water .
  11. Sprinkle 2 tsp of salt and 1/2 tbsp of sugar and give it a stir . Add salt more or less as per your taste.
  12. Close the lid of the pressure cooker and keep the gas on medium flame.W_AlooMatar7
  13. Let it cook till 5-6 whistles and then turn off the flame.
  14. Let the cooker cool down completely do not try to release the pressure out .
  15. Open the lid and stir once again gently.
  16. Transfer into serving bowl and garnish with some freshly chopped coriander on top.
  17. Serve Aloo matar hot with roti or plain rice.W_AlooMatar3


  • If you are using frozen green peas just boil peas with water in microwave for 2 minutes or on stove with water for 5 minutes .This will remove the raw flavor from green peas and add fresh color to it.
  • Roast the masala till the oil seperates from it to get the best flavor.
  • Adding little sugar will help balance the tangy flavor of tomatoes.
